William R. Cindy Laughlin, president of Recruiting Specialists, was recently elected to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame Board of Directors. Laughlin began her career as an executive recruiter for a search firm that specialized in retail. After acquiring ownership of the firm in 1993, Laughlin built Recruiting Specialists into the talent-acquisition firm that it is today. Recruiting Specialists focuses on many facets of the retail industry, including big box and luxury retail. Outside of the office, Laughlin is also very active in the community. She was previously the president (and now the chairwoman) of Justice Assistance. She is also the education chairwoman for the Massachusetts Association of Personnel Services, as well as a trustee of the Providence Performing Arts Center and she continues to support several of Rhode Island’s nonprofit organizations. more

Francis A. Connor III, a partner at Barton Gilman LLP, will be featured in the peer-reviewed publication Best Lawyers in America 2015. Tricia Jedele is the vice president and director of the Conservation Law Foundation’s Rhode Island office. Before serving at CLF, Jedele was a special assistant attorney general and an environmental advocate for the state for more than 10 years and represented the Ocean State on several major environmental cases. At CLF, Jedele is currently working on Clean Air Act litigation involving the state landfill and Clean Water Act litigation involving stormwater pollution. She holds a B.A. in political science from Providence College and a J.D. from Creighton University School of Law. more
Kim Ward, director of public and community affairs at Twin River Casino, was recently honored as one of five proven leaders during the annual Great Women of Gaming Awards for Casino Enterprise Management Magazine. Over the past 16 years at Twin River, Ward has served on the design team to repurpose existing space into a table-games area, helped to develop a charitable-giving program and she has represented the casino on a series of issues, from council-zoning-ordinance meetings to passing a table-games referendum. Ward holds a BFA in computer graphics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. more
Vinka Oyanedel-Craver is an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Rhode Island. She has also published more than a dozen articles on the chemical and biological processes used for sustainable water and wastewater purification, as well as collaborated on several projects. Most recently, she is working with Jordanian researchers to improve desalination technology. She has been working on embedding silver nanoparticles into the membranes used in current systems. The nanoparticles will slow bacteria growth and reduce contamination, as well as maintenance because operations will no longer need to be shut down to clean the machines. The yearlong collaboration (which began in 2014) between several Jordanian and U.S. researchers is backed by a $314,000 grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development and a $100,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Oyanedel-Craver holds a Ph.D. from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and a B.S. and an M.S. from the Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso. more
