PROVIDENCE – Cleverhood, a small business that designs and manufactures outerwear, is branching into active wear for dogs.

The Cleverpup line of waterproof dog coats will launch on Friday, featuring the same high-performance rainwear worn by bicyclists and pedestrians.

The initial pattern offering, electric houndstooth, has built-in reflective thread that will keep the dog visible at night. Waterproof and heavy duty, the coat is secured with sturdy webbing and lightweight aluminum clasps.

Although available in several lengths, the coats will have a uniform, introductory price of $69.

As with all its products, the coats are manufactured in Fall River, Mass.

The four-employee company, headquartered at 425 W. Fountain St., decided to launch a canine line after participating in a Goldman Sachs-sponsored program for small businesses intended to help small companies come up with growth strategies, said owner and designer Susan Mocarski.

“For us, it makes a lot of sense,” she said of the new line. Although the company sells internationally, many of its customers live in cities and have dogs. Urban dogs, living in apartments, may have to be walked four times a day during rain and snow.

That means a lot of wet, heavy fur.

Mocarski, used her own dogs, as well as those enrolled in the Ruffin Wranglers dog excursion company, to test the product in rain, sleet and snow.

“I have an old husky. When she gets wet, it takes a week for her to dry,” Mocarski said.
Not anymore.
