DASSAULT SYSTÈMES CEO BERNARD CHARLÈS said smaller companies are reluctant to invest in new software due to the uncertain economic climate.

PARIS – Dassault Systèmes S.A. said today second-quarter revenue grew by double digits at its Providence-based virtual-testing software subsidiary, Simulia, even as the parent company’s profit fell 41 percent.

Dassault Systèmes (FR: DSY) posted second-quarter net income of €25.7 million ($36.12 million), or 22 cents per share, in the three months ended June 30, down from €43.2 million, or 36 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 11 percent year over year to €310.9 million ($436.91 million).

“The second quarter unfolded as anticipated,” Bernard Charlès, Dassault’s president and CEO, said in a statement. The results were in line with the company’s expectations, partly thanks to cost cutting, he said.

“On balance, business conditions during the second quarter were similar to the first quarter, with customers remaining cautious with respect to new business investments,” Charlès said. Smaller companies are particularly hesitant to make new investments, he said.

Although Dassault does not break out revenue figures for its individual subsidiaries, the company’s product lifecycle management (PLM) segment, which includes Simulia, saw revenue fall 9 percent to €206.5 million ($290.2 million).

In a statement, Dassault said Simulia posted “double-digit software revenue growth” yet again in the last quarter.

In a conference call this morning, Thibault de Tersant, Dassault’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, said Simulia’s software revenue growth “benefited from the fact that most of its software is purchased under a rental model, and this held up pretty well across the three regions [America, Europe and Asia], leading to double-digit software growth in constant currencies.”

But, de Tersant added, “with respect to new business, [Simulia] experienced some slowdown in new business activity.”

Simulia (formerly Abaqus Inc.) is a Providence-based developer of virtual-testing software and a division of the French company Dassault Systèmes (FR: DSY), which itself is a subsidiary of the French aerospace and software giant Groupe Dassault. Additional information is available at Simulia.com.
