Inc. Magazine’s top 5,000 measure growth over 3 years

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Eleven companies in Rhode Island and nine in neighboring Bristol County, Mass., have made the 2009 list of the top 5,000 fastest-growing private businesses in the nation, according to Inc. Magazine.

The Kaydon Group LLC in Taunton, at No. 172, ranked the highest in the area. Kaydon is a technology services contractor that handles security, telecommunications and IT projects.

In Rhode Island, the top-ranked business, at No. 1,143, was AmazingCharts.com, based in North Kingstown. It was founded in 2001 by Dr. Jonathan Bertman to provide medical professionals with a software system to do such tasks as charting, scheduling, interoffice messaging and billing. Bertman, who has a private practice in Hope Valley, also teaches at Brown University’s Warren Alpert School of Medicine.

“Savvy trend-spotters and those who invest in private companies know that the Inc. 5000 is the best place to find out about young companies that are achieving success through a wide variety of unprecedented business models, as well as older private companies that are still expanding at an impressive rate,” said Jim Melloan, Inc. 5000 project manager.

The Inc. 5000, ranked by three-year sales growth, is an independent listing of the nation’s fastest growing private companies across all industries.

Despite the recession, the magazine said, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list increased to $214 billion, an increase of $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent. The Inc. 5000 are responsible for creating more than 1 million jobs since their founding, the magazine said.

Atrion Networking Corp., a Warwick-based provider of information technology and managed services, ranked 3,739 after a 60.4 percent sales revenue growth rate from 2005 to 2008, according to CEO Tim Hebert. This is the third year in a row that the company, established in 1987, made the Inc. 5000 list.

“Our focus on team development, client needs and Atrion’s technical vision, including embracing emerging technologies, has played a significant role in our achievements,” said Chris Poe, Atrion’s chief technology officer.
