CVS settles suit over expired products
BLOOMBERG NEWS / STEVE HOCKSTEIN
OFFICIALS IN THE New York attorney general’s office said they found expired products in 60 percent of the CVS/pharmacy locations they inspected.

WOONSOCKET — CVS Caremark Corp. has agreed to pay $875,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general over the sale of expired products.

The suit resulted from an investigation of drugstore chains by N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office, Bloomberg News reported.

Cuomo’s staff said they found an “egregious pattern” at stores owned by CVS and Rite Aid Corp. of expired products being left on the shelves, with out-of-date items found in 60 percent of CVS/pharmacy locations and 43 percent of Rite Aid locations that were checked.

Rite Aid settled with Cuomo’s office last December for as much as $1.3 million.

CVS agreed to conduct inspections of its 432 New York stores for expired products and pay a $2,500 fine for any store that fails, Cuomo said. In a statement, the company also said it would improve its own policies on policing expired products.
