NEW YORK – Rhode Island-based construction giant Gilbane Inc. is one of the best companies to work for in America, according to a list published by Fortune magazine last week.

FORTUNE ranked Gilbane 92 on its top 100 Best Companies to Work For. Last year, the magazine ranked the Providence-based company at 91. The magazine said the company, run by fourth-generation Gilbanes, placed an emphasis on the company’s traditions and values. It also hands each new employee a laptop. Gilbane was the only Rhode Island company to make the list this year.

“For the second year in a row Fortune has selected us as one of the 100 Best Places to Work in America. This documents that after 137 years Gilbane still lives by its core values,” said William Gilbane Jr. “Our employees who were surveyed reinforced that Gilbane is a very special company. The passion of our people to deliver outstanding client satisfaction combined with their desire for continuous learning and development is what fuels our success.”

Fortune partnered with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct surveys that asks employees about their attitudes on management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. Companies also provided information about pay and benefit programs and answered a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication and diversity.
