Architect chosen for America’s Cup bid

NEWPORT – Newport Collaborative Architects Inc. has been chosen as the firm to prepare architectural renderings of marine facilities and assets as part of Rhode Island’s bid to have the America’s Cup races return to Newport in 2013.

The drawings are expected to be presented when Rhode Island representatives meet with Oracle CEO Lawrence Ellison, the leader of the BMW /Oracle sailing team, which captured the America’s Cup title in February. Ellison is expected to visit Newport sometime in the next few weeks as part of a victory tour.

The announcement was made at Friday’s meeting of the America’s Cup Rhode Island 2013 Planning Committee, which has been assembled under the leadership of Keith W. Stokes, executive director of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation.

The contract provides for up to $20,000 in services, according to Melissa Chambers, a spokesperson with the EDC. The lead architect working on the plan will be architect John Grosvenor, according to Chambers.

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce will also be investing in the effort to help bring the America’s Cup back to Rhode Island, underwriting the “Why Come Here?” part of the presentation, providing up to $10,000, according to Chamber Executive Director Jody Sullivan.

How cool would this have been as a competition? NCA are fine architects but this is an effort the entire state (and all its architects) could get behind and that way, instead of one golden bullet in the gun, we could have had a dozen or more--one of which could win the fancy of Larry Ellison and the Oracle team. $10,000 to the winner, $5,000 to second place and (5) $1,000 special mentions probably would have garnered 100 entries. Just a thought for the future…

I agree with the competition idea although I think this is a very rushed deal...NCA has two weeks to get something together to show Ellison which is tight in itself. I guess in this case - timing is everything.
