BARBARA GALLONIO was recently recognized by MetalForming Magazine as a Woman of Excellence in metal forming and fabricating. The award is in accordance with the magazine's efforts to "recognize individuals who make the industry progressive, dynamic and innovative." Gallonio serves as vice president and chief operating officer at Cranston-based Tedco Inc., where she was initially hired as human relations manager and was later promoted to general manager.
How did you come to pursue metal forming and fabricating as a career?
Honestly, by accident. In 1998, I received an offer to join the family business to support Tedco's growth and development. I started my career as human resources manager and developed into the manufacturing area of the company to support employee development, production process and customer relationships. There are challenges each day and it is very satisfying to see improvement and success, as we continually move forward. I encouraged my children to join the company and they have developed extraordinary skills that support the technical areas of manufacturing. There are great career opportunities for young people in manufacturing.
What is it like to be a woman in the largely male-dominated world of manufacturing?
I feel I'm respected and appreciated because of my background and ability to support all areas of manufacturing. It's true, there are times when I'm the only woman in meetings and seminars, but my contributions equal those of my male counterparts.
What, in your opinion, does the future hold for manufacturing in Rhode Island?
My recent responsibilities in business development and sales generation have led to many conversations with local manufacturers. We all agree that times are challenging. However, there is light shining on Rhode Island and we all need to make sure that light stays bright and energized. We have done a lot of work with the Polaris MEP group in support of sustainable growth and innovation strategies. Rhode Island has many excellent programs, and we need to work strategically to stay on top. n
