PROVIDENCE – As part of the annual Gowrie Group Challenge, which concluded earlier this year, the Gowrie Group, an independent insurance agent, raised $172,919 for The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries, breaking their previous donation record.

The Gowrie Group Challenge was kicked off in November by a $30,000 matched donation by the insurance group to SSKP.

Carter Gowrie, CEO and founder of the group, which has an office in Newport, said in the past 13 years the group has raised more than $1.3 million in support of the SSKP, which has gone to supply more than 4 million meals to those in need.

In addition, between Nov. 15, 2016 and Jan. 15, 2017, more than 400 individuals and companies participated by contributing funds to help stock the five SSKP pantries and serve those who are struggling to feed themselves. As partner sponsors, the Safety Zone, LC Doane Co., Tower Labels, Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tale and BrandTech Scientific also provided matched funds.
