Hasbro dropping music-mixing game in September

PAWTUCKET – Hasbro Inc. is dropping DROPMIX, a new music-mixing game, this September, allowing players to create their own mixes of songs like “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 and “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars.

The toymaker said the game was developed in collaboration with video game developer Harmonix Music Systems Inc., which created Rock Band and Dance Central.

“We continue to focus on creating cutting-edge play experiences and DROPMIX delivers on this in a mind-blowing way. We teamed up with Harmonix to leverage their mastery in music gaming and combine it with our expertise in physical- and digital-play experiences,” Samantha Lomow, senior vice president of Hasbro Brands, said in a statement. “DROPMIX gives players a fresh way to combine their favorite artists and songs, find new ones and create their best ‘drop the mic’ moments.”

Steve Janiak, CEO of Harmonix, said the collaboration with Hasbro has enabled the company to create the “next evolution of musical play.”

“DROPMIX offers an entirely new way to discover, experience and interact with music that’s social, fun and competitive. When players place their first cards on the DROPMIX board this September, when they hear their first mind-blowing mix, they’re going to be completely amazed,” Janiak said.

In addition to The Jackson 5 and Bruno Mars, DROPMIX includes hits such as “Take Over Control” by Afrojack (featuring Eva Simons), “Closer” by The Chainsmokers (featuring Halsey), “Sing” by Ed Sheeran, “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor, “House Party” by Sam Hunt and other popular pop, R&B, dance, indie, country, rock and hip-hop selections, according to Hasbro.

The DROPMIX game, which retails for $99.99, features an electronic board, as well as 60 cards featuring various musical genres as well as the app, which will be free to download on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android devices.

When a DROPMIX card is placed on a mix slot, the electronic DROPMIX Board immediately starts playing the corresponding part of the song (bass, beat, loop or vocals) noted on the card. The board can read up to five DROPMIX cards at once; the software in the app combines the music within each card to create a unique mix. NFC chips, a technology used in smartphones with digital wallets, is used in the cards.

Hasbro also will release Playlist Packs with 16 DROPMIX cards for $14.99 and Discover Packs with five DROPMIX cards for $4.99. Additional cards will be released on an ongoing basis throughout the year so players can collect and curate their own custom decks, creating new soundtracks each time they play. That means 300 DROPMIX cards will be available in 2017, according to the company.
