In Sylvia Maxfield, Providence College has a dynamic leader of its College of Business. She has the academic qualifications one would expect, including a doctorate in political economy from Harvard University. She has a varied and interesting work experience, having held academic posts at Yale University and Simmons College, as well as having worked as a sovereign credit analyst for Lehman Brothers.
But her remarks in this week’s Newsmakers interview bear special attention.
“We all have to have a bias for action in our careers,” she said, when talking about the power of entrepreneurial behavior to kick-start not just an individual’s career but a region’s economy.
She went on to say that the rapid pace of change in the global economy makes a status-quo approach untenable. With job growth in the United States dominated by small and medium-size businesses, entrepreneurs are needed now more than ever in enterprises of all sizes.
More than just the students at Providence College should be taking her remarks to heart. •
