Schools for Schools at the University of Rhode Island is a nonprofit organization which functions under a larger nationwide organization called Invisible Children. The aim of our organization is to raise awareness and funds for the youth and schools of Northern Uganda. Invisible Children raises awareness by showing documentaries around the country and holding largescale nationwide events, two of which brought over 70,000 high school and college students to various cities in the U.S. each time. These same high school and college students have raised over 2.5 million dollars which are currently being used in building new schools, training teachers, and buying supplies in Northern Uganda.
Schools for Schools URI is hosting a state-wide awareness event on April 26, 2008 called UganDay: A Day for Peace. This event will consist of two parts. The first takes place in Providence, starting at the corner of Brown and Waterman Street at 12:00, and will consist of a white flag parade representing our call for peace in Northern Uganda, ending at the State House at 1:00. Lydia Natoolo, Ugandan Native, will be speaking at the Statehouse regarding her experience growing up in Uganda and how organizations like Schools for Schools are helping the children who reside there. Following her speech, will be 22 minutes of silence, each minute symbolizing one year of the longest running war in Africa. At the conclusion of the silence, everyone is encouraged to join us at Goddard Park for workshops, games, music, and (bring your own) picnic until dusk. It will be sure to be an inspiring and powerful event followed by fun to raise awareness for the unseen children in Northern Uganda. For more information, please visit www.s4suri.com.
