Newport Art Museum publication wins national recognition

Newport, RI: A catalogue produced by the Newport Art Museum to accompany the 2007 exhibition, “Collector: The Collection of Elizabeth Brooke Blake”, has been recognized for excellence by The American Association of Museums. Conversations with Elizabeth Brooke Blake, designed by Emily Lessard with photography by Josef Astor, was awarded Honorable Mention in the AAM’s 2008 Museum Publications Design Competition. The exhibition and catalogue were special projects of the Museum’s former Executive Director, Dr. Karl E. Willers.

The AAM Museum Publications Design Competition is the only national, juried competition of its kind. According to the AAM, there were over 1000 entries in 15 categories and winners were, “…chosen for their overall design excellence, creativity and ability to express an institution’s personality, mission or special features.” The panel of judges included graphic designers, museum professionals and publishers.

Designer Lessard, a founding partner of the New York design firm, Punch & Pica says the award-winning and unconventional publication, which is formatted like an artist’s portfolio rather than a traditional bound catalogue, is a fitting complement to Elizabeth Blake’s trend-setting life and career. “Betty Blake has always gone against the grain. Her eye, the art and artists she collected were very original, ahead of their time. She was always way ahead of the curve,” says Lessard.

“The AAM publication award is further evidence of the Newport Art Museum’s ongoing pursuit of excellence,” says Acting Director, Elizabeth Goddard. The Newport Art Museum earned accreditation by the American Association of Museums in 2007. AAM accreditation is the highest national recognition of a museum's commitment to accountability, public service, professional museum standards, and excellence in education and stewardship. Fewer than 5% of America's 17,500 museums are accredited.

The Newport Art Museum’s collections and exhibitions focus on the visual artists of Newport and southeastern New England, reflecting both the rich heritage of the past and the lively art scene of the present. The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue across from Touro Park.
