Smiths Detection signs $10M deal with Thai Airways

Newport-based Smiths Detection, a leading provider of integrated intelligent security systems, will provide a comprehensive integrated security system for Thai Airways at Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The contract, announced Wednesday, is valued at more than $10 million.

It is the first such international contract for Smiths Detection, which will supply, install, and integrate X-ray screening equipment, the network infrastructure, intelligent Closed Caption TV systems, access control and intrusion-detection systems.

“This landmark contract for Smiths Detection validates our LiveWave acquisition and demonstrates our ability to integrate the industry’s broadest portfolio of detection solutions into an advanced, layered security system,” said Stephen Phipson, group managing director of Smiths Detection, said in the company's said in its BusinessWire news release. “Smiths Detection-LiveWave adds a new dimension of interoperable and scalable technology, enabling the integration of multiple sensors which create advanced security solutions.”

The company's LiveWave business unit will integrate the security hardware through its FirstView systems management software top create a secure network and master control facility that will link to all physical security equipment at the airlines buildings at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened to commercial flights late last month.

“As the national carrier, safety has always been our top priority,” said Apinan Sumanaseni, president of Thai Airways International. “This includes safety in the air and on the ground, safety for our passengers, our crews, our staff, the public and, of course our aircraft and all other facilities.

"Over the past 46 years many things have changed, both in the workplace and in the environment, and our safety and security practices have constantly evolved to meet the changing conditions. Today, effective and efficient building security systems are essential, and that is why we chose to install Smiths Detection security systems in all THAI buildings at Suvarnabhumi Airport, recognizing the company’s high standard and advanced technology systems.”

Bangkok's new airport will be one of the largest in Asia, with a handling capacity of more than 45 million passengers per year. Smiths Detection has partnered with EMC Group Public Company Limited, one of the leading electrical and mechanical engineering contractors in Thailand, to administer the ongoing maintenance there.

“We anticipate that airport facilities across the globe, but particularly in the U.S. market, will follow suit with next-generation, integrated security solutions,” said Peter Mottur, President of Smiths Detection LiveWave. “Our LiveWave FirstView® security management software, which underpins the Thai Airways system, offers a level of security system management and coordination that has not been seen in the transportation or critical infrastructure markets before.

"This advanced project demonstrates that physical security equipment, such as our Hi-Scan x-ray systems, which are to be used principally for cargo screening, can be linked together with CCTV, access control and intruder alarm systems. Our ability to build a single integrated system is an unmatched value add for our customers, allowing them to leverage their existing security assets in new and powerful ways.”
