Providence, RI (December 14, 2011) — Sophia Academy’s Annual Campaign is underway and features 2004 graduate Dania Sanchez, who is now a member of the school’s Board of Directors.

Located on Branch Avenue and founded in 2001 by the legendary Sr. Mary Reilly, Sophia Academy is the only independent middle school in Providence that provides a gender specific, holistic educational experience that focuses on the intellectual and emotional growth of its students and families. Sophia offers girls facing economic inequities an empowering educational program in a vibrant community where they learn to live as confident and compassionate young women and leaders.

While it’s always an honor to serve on the Board of any organization, Dania’s involvement on the Sophia Board is more than an honor. It’s a recognition of her personal success that began when she walked through Sophia’s door as a shy, sixth grader in 2001.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” she recalls. Looking back, Dania says that Sophia “helped me find my own voice. I was inspired by the strong and dedicated women, who were my teachers and mentors.”

Since graduating from Sophia, Dania attended Classical High School and then Rhode Island College.

Head of School Gigi Di Bello notes in her communication to donors that “our efforts to improve the lives of students for today and tomorrow are ambitious, but as an independent school our goals’ can’t be met with the generous support of people like you. Unlike private institutions, our tuition is nominal and many families can only afford a token amount. We receive no tax dollars and depend on grants and the support of our donors to continue our mission.”
