PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – On Saturday, April 28, nearly 500 community members gathered for “Clean Day on the Greenway 2012” to spruce-up parks in Olneyville, Water Place Park, and stretches of the Green Way Bike Path from Providence Place to Johnston.

Organized by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, the project received hands-on support from the Olneyville Collaborative – LOPCO Contracting, Olneyville Housing Corporation, United Way, A Sweet Creation, Providence Housing Authority, Manton Avenue Project, PASA Everyday Explorers, and Meeting Street. Donors of supplies included Adler’s Hardware and Benjamin Moore.

Volunteers transformed Riverside Park in Olneyville. A new fence was built around the community garden, and the garden shed was completed. Planting beds and tree rings were weeded and mulched. Trash cans, signs, picnic tables, and murals were painted. Mulch was added to the playgrounds for safety and cleanliness. Over 30 yards of trash was cleared away from the park, bike path and edges of the Woonasquatucket River.

In addition to the fleet of LOPCO trucks which hauled trash and brush, the staff was out in full force with 20 company volunteers. LOPCO employees also motivated their friends and family to be a part of the clean-up.

“We are so grateful to Tom Lopatosky and his staff for their hours of service with a smile, paint, brushes, equipment, vehicles,” said Alicia J. Lehrer, Executive Director of Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council.

“LOPCO gave so much to make this day a success. Tom and his crew deserve not just our thanks but community recognition for their commitment to making Olneyville a great place to live,” said Lehrer.
