From their super-efficient UV press to their use of recycled milk bottle paper, OmniColor is a green model for Rhode Island printers.

Providence, RI – OmniColor Printing is an eco-friendly role model for all Rhode Island printers. The implementation of their new ultra violet (UV) press and their green business policies at work continue to add to their successful efforts as an environmentally conscious printer.

“OmniColor has made huge strides toward implementing a green printing system Rhode Island businesses can count on. We produce high quality work while keeping an environmentally conscious mindset and office. Many of our clients request their projects to be printed with green technology and we are answering their needs,” said John Nickson, president of OmniColor.

Printing is an important resource for all businesses, but the process can adversely affect the environment if certain measures are not taken. Standard printing inks release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. When released into the environment, VOCs can cause air pollution, damage soil and groundwater and contribute to sick building syndrome where humans become ill from breathing in contaminants. Tobacco, paint thinner and crude oil also release volatile organic compounds.

Aside from harmful chemicals in ink, large amounts of paper and other materials may be wasted during particular printing processes. OmniColor makes it their priority to ensure the use of safe materials and recycle as many goods as possible.

Printing Green
OmniColor is most proud of their UV press. This large-scale press is highly efficient, as it produces zero VOCs and works much faster than a standard press. The UV ink dries instantaneously so harmful drying agents are not necessary. Its computer to plate technology reduces “make ready” processes so projects print faster and use less energy and electricity.

“OmniColor has the only large scale Heidelberg UV press in Rhode Island. Here, we make the effort to use recycled products and produce as little waste as possible while ensuring an affordable option for clients,” said John Nickson.

In order to minimize waste and maximize sustainability, OmniColor’s account executives explore and promote paper alternatives for their printing projects. From milk bottles to limestone substrates, each material has made its way into the hands of consumers through the highly efficient and high-quality, UV printing process. In fact, most of these materials are not able to print on a standard press.

Today, many printers have opted to use eco-friendly materials such as recycled paper and soy-based ink. While these are more earth conscious than standard ink and paper, soy ink still releases toxins and VOCs. UV ink results in zero byproducts and has the same capabilities as regular ink. Many of Omni’s high-end projects call for varnishes and metallic ink both containing harmful toxins. UV ink can print these same effects and produce higher quality results with no VOCs.

“The purchase of this first rate UV press was a huge investment, but the results are outstanding. Omni’s UV press produces quality prints with bright, vibrant colors while doing its part to protect the environment,” said John.

Working Green
OmniColor continues to serve the environment by enforcing green business practices in their office, as well. From recycling printing blankets to installing highly efficient lighting systems, Omni has raised the bar in green printing and green business practices.

Omni also was forward thinking in their initiative to recycle wood palates by donating them to homes with wood burning stoves and sending metal plates to scrap metal companies. Their ink canisters are paper and Omni saves unused colors for future printing jobs instead of throwing them away.

As a printer that puts environmental concerns at the top of their agenda, OmniColor received a coveted Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. As a certified member, Omni purchases or uses paper from paper sources participating in good forestry practices.

“We don’t just support green business efforts, we practice them everyday here at OmniColor,” said John.
