Following reports that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. contributed $1 million to the Republican Governors Association earlier this year, Democratic candidate for Congress David Cicilline issued the following statement:

“Could there possibly be any greater evidence that our country needs serious campaign finance reform? Yesterday’s revelation that News Corp. contributed $1 million to the Republican Governors Association earlier this year not only reveals one media company’s aggressive political bent, but in addition threatens the very ideals of our democracy – namely that each citizen is entitled to an equal say in choosing our elected officials. Voters are right to question whether the Republican Governors Association will be working for Rupert Murdoch rather than the American people.”

“News Corp.’s continued use of the slogan ‘Fair and Balanced’ is laughable, but its attempt to buy elections is really alarming. Congress should act swiftly and decisively to pass legislation that prevents powerful corporate interests from influencing campaigns.”

“In Congress, I will fight to break the link between money and politics in Washington. In order to do this, we should take legislative action to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United and end corporate influence in the political arena, pass a lifetime ban on members of Congress becoming lobbyists, and pass the Fair Elections Now Act to provide for greater public financing of federal election campaigns.”

“Only by breaking this link will we have a Congress that is more responsive to the needs of the American people.”
