PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital city is one of the top 10 alternative cities for young professionals in 2017, according to movebuddha.com.

Movebuddha.com, an Athens, Ga.-based website allowing users to compare moving options, said Providence ranks fourth on the list, behind Madison, Wis.; St. Paul, Minn.; and Cincinnati.

The website makes mention of Providence’s nickname as the “creative capital,” celebrates its actual name, highlights its LGBT community, and also notes that it is the home of Ivy League Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College and the Rhode Island School of Design.

The website said that “young professionals really only need a couple of things. Jobs, cheap rent and fun things to do with people their age.”

So it based the list on average rental price for a one-bedroom apartment, unemployment rate, nightlife measured by bars per square mile, percentage of the city’s population aged 20-30 and average age.

It said the average rent in Providence is $880, the average age is 29.9, there are 18 bars per square mile, 21 percent of the population is between 20 and 30, and the jobless rate is 4.4 percent.

“Unemployment is the second highest on this list, but what would your 20s be without worrying about your job?” the website states.
