NUWC, URI team up on center for undersea tech


NEWPORT – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport, Monday announced it has established a Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology with the University of Rhode Island.

A partnership agreement was signed in late January, NUWC said. Its purpose to forge an alliance focused on cooperative research, technology transfer, product development, and science and technology training and education.

The partnership will both foster advancements in undersea technologies to meet the Navy’s needs, and work to identify civilian applications for the emerging technologies, NUWC said.

Division Newport, one of two NUWC divisions; focuses on research, development and evaluation of vessels, weapons and countermeasures for undersea warfare. Its efforts range from fundamental research to support for evolving fleet operations.
