BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Smart USA Distributor LLC has announced plans to open 74 minicar dealerships in 31 states, including one in Rhode Island.

The local dealership – smart center Warwick – will be located at 1557 Bald Hill Road, above Inskip Auto Center Mercedes. Plans call for it to open by mid-January, the company said.

U.S. dealers will sell three versions of the smart ForTwo minicar: the pure coupe, with list prices starting at $11,590; the passion coupe, starting at $13,590; and the passion cabriolet, starting at $16,590.

The minicars – manufactured by Daimler AG – are already popular in Europe, where they have been sold for years.

“Customers are looking for alternative modes of transportation these days that are not only environmentally friendly, but are also efficient for their lifestyles,” Marcel Valois, president of the Inskip AutoMall, said in announcing the smart center’s Jan. 17 opening.

“The smart car is a perfect blend of design and functionality,” Valois added, “and we are certainly proud to add such an innovative automobile to our brand selection.”
