FM Global grows its R.I. work force by 13%

JOHNSTON – FM Global, the state’s largest private company and one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers, says its Rhode Island work force expanded 13 percent in 2007.

Forty-eight positions were created last year at the company’s corporate headquarters on Atwood Avenue and its Research Campus in West Glocester; 51 jobs were moved to Rhode Island from FM Global’s offices in Massachusetts; and 93 people were hired to fill other vacancies in the Ocean State. These 192 jobs “were full-time professional-level positions in the fields of information technology, finance, underwriting, engineering, marketing, and human resources,” the mutual insurance company said.

FM Global is a $4.5-billion policyholder-owned company that insures more than one third of Fortune 1000 businesses around the world. Of its global staff of 4,800, more than 35 percent (1,710 employees) are in southern New England; 860 work in Rhode Island, at the company’s headquarters and Glocester Research Campus, while another 850 work in Waltham and Norwood, Mass.

In December, FM Global announced plans to build a $60 million replacement headquarters in Johnston, off Central Avenue, on a 93-acre parcel near the company’s current Johnston offices. (READ MORE.) The project’s groundbreaking is slated for this spring, and the four-story, 340,000-square-foot facility is slated for completion in mid-2009.

“With clients in more than 130 countries, our local employees provide important multi-discipline support to our worldwide operations,” Enzo Rebula, senior vice president of human resources at FM Global, said in a statement today.

“Most of our job growth continues to be in the information technology, finance, research and engineering sectors …. These are higher-level, more specialized job positions that are key to delivering on our unique research-based risk management approach of helping clients prevent property damage, rather than recover from property-related disasters.”

Johnston-based FM Global – formed from the merger of Allendale Insurance and four other companies, and occupying the former Allendale headquarters – is a commercial and industrial property insurer with 4,800 employees in 52 offices worldwide. Its roots in Rhode Island stretch back to 1835. Additional information is available at www.fmglobal.com.
