MIDDLETOWN – The DataScope monocular handheld compass from KVH Industries Inc. (Nasdaq: KVHI) has been named a “PS Best Choice” by Practical Sailor magazine, which described the device as “our reigning ‘king of the hand-bearing compasses.’”

The DataScope, the top performer in the magazine’s testing, “delivered the most accurate bearings in all conditions,” Practical Sailor said in its review. “Its accuracy and numerous features make it a very handy navigational tool.”

“The unit proved as useful, accurate, and user friendly at night and in rough conditions as it was on a sunny, calm day,” the reviewers said, adding: “Not only does the chip technology afford recording of nine bearings and an automatic averaging capability, but there’s a nifty built-in range calculating function, chronograph and other valuable features.”

The waterproof device, popular with boaters, hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts, combines a 5x30 monocular viewer, a digital compass, an electronic rangefinder and a chronometer in one pocket-sized unit.

“We are very proud that the DataScope has earned top honors and high praise in this demanding product comparison," Jim George, KVH’s director of satellite sales, said in a statement. “The DataScope is a model of consistency, reliability and durability that continually performs just as it is designed and advertised. We are quite pleased that it continues to be a key navigational tool for so many sailors."
