National Grid wins national energy-efficiency awards

WALTHAM, Mass. – National Grid’s energy efficiency programs garnered three national awards this year from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, which lauded the company’s leadership in achieving energy savings and mitigating climate change.

“Partners such as National Grid are raising the bar for energy efficiency, teaching customers that their decisions can make a difference,” said Robert J. Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air & Radiation. The electric and natural gas utility “is doing an excellent job working with Energy Star to transform the market for energy-efficient products, services, homes and programs that help Americans save money and protect our environment.”

The DOE and EPA honored the utility with three Energy Star awards, presented in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.:

• National Grid, as a single utility, won EPA’s Partner of the Year Award for its success in boosting participation in the Home Performance with Energy Star Program via the utility’s outreach, education and marketing programs. The utility demonstrated leadership with a well-planned, results-oriented strategy aiming to make energy-efficiency upgrades and thermal shell improvements more accessible and affordable to the home-improvement market, the EPA said.

• National Grid and the Joint Management Committee shared a second EPA Partner of the Year Award, recognizing their increased efforts – via consumer marketing, incentives and technical support – to encourage construction of Energy Star-rated housing. Such homes are designed to achieve higher levels of comfort and energy efficiency while reducing energy costs and environmental impact.

• The utility also shared in a EPA and DOE Energy Star Award for Sustained Excellence recognizing the Northeast Energy Star Products Initiative’s consumer lighting and appliance program. The regional effort – facilitated by the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP), of which Natural Grid is a member – offers incentives to residential customers who switch to more-efficient lighting or home appliances. It includes a multi-media marketing plan and field-service outreach.

“We are proud to receive these awards and to continue our partnership with Energy Star,” said Tim Stout, vice president of energy efficiency and distributed resources for National Grid. “We actively promote the broader benefits energy-efficiency offers, not only for energy savings for our customers, but also for environmental protection that addresses global warming,” he added. “We encourage all consumers to participate in some level of energy efficiency.”

National Grid, a division of the U.K.-based National Grid plc (NYSE: NGG, LSE: NG), distributes electricity and natural gas to nearly 4 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. Additional information is available at www.NationalGridUS.com.
