WARREN – Pro-Act Biotech’s manure-treatment process is best known for reducing odor, minimizing solid volume and making nutrients more manageable. But recent on-farm testing demonstrated further benefits, the company said.
Researchers found that Pro-Act’s “biologically active” manure had a higher percentage of inorganic nitrogen available for immediate plant use than its untreated counterpart. They also found lower top-water phosphorus levels in the manure lagoon than are typical in storage of untreated manure.
“This comes down to the farm purchasing much less fertilizer, being able to irrigate more and growing more bountiful crops,” Pro-Act said.
The company’s three-state digester converts organic nitrogen to more readily available ammonium, yet limits the evaporation by which that nutrient can be lost. Its nutrient stratification ensures that most of the phosphorus settles to the bottom of the lagoon, allowing users to use more of the nitrogen-rich top-water for irrigation.
“Our customers find they spend much less on fertilizer,” said President Bill Campion. “So much less that, in many cases, the savings pays for their Pro-Act treatment.”
