Kopin wins $4.2M night-vision display contract

TAUNTON – Kopin Corp. (Nasdaq: KOPN) yesterday announced its participation in a multimillion dollar military program to produce the world’s highest-resolution microdisplays for a new generation of night vision systems.

The Taunton-based manufacturer of liquid-crystal displays and transistors was recently awarded the first phase of a $4.2 million Army program to speed production and improve the performance of its CyberDisplay SXGA LVR microdisplay.

“This award reinforces Kopin’s position as the leading technology developer and supplier of superior, high-performance microdisplays to the U.S. military,” said John C.C. Fan, Kopin’s president and CEO. “Having succeeded in developing the Cyberdisplay SXGA LVR, we are focused on continually perfecting the technology necessary to produce such a complex display.”

Kopin’s night-vision technology uses multi-spectral imaging sensors and full-color displays to provide soldiers with daytime-like images – even in total darkness.

The initial phase of the three-year program is aimed at accelerating the development of manufacturing technology for Kopin’s standard SXGA LVR, said Michael Presz, Kopin’s vice president of government contracting. Future phases of the project will increase display transmission and operational readiness of the product, he said.

The CyberDisplay SXGA LVR is a 0.97-inch-diagonal active-matrix liquid-crystal display with 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution. With the integration of an internal heater, it offers nearly instant-on capability at low ambient temperatures with minimal power consumption.

Kopin Corp. (Nasdaq: KOPN) develops and manufactures telecommunications and digital imaging technologies under the Kopin, CyberDisplay and NanoSemiconductor Co. trademarks. Additional information is available at www.kopin.com.
