PROVIDENCE – “Gasoline prices are up another 2 cents this week, the sixth consecutive week of increases but the smallest one-week increase in the last month,” AAA Southern New England wrote in its weekly fuel-price report.

AAA’s May 5 survey of gasoline prices found self-serve, unleaded regular averaging $3.609 per gallon at Rhode Island stations – up 2 cents compared with a week ago and 47 cents since the beginning of the year – setting a new state record for the fourth week in a row. A year ago, the average local price was $2.879.

Nationwide, the average self-serve price of regular gas was $3.619, a penny higher than this week’s Rhode Island price and last week’s national average.

Prices for self-serve regular at local stations had a 15-cent range, from $3.549 to $3.699. Wider ranges were seen for other grades of gasoline, which had average self-serve prices of $3.739 for midgrade unleaded and $3.839 for premium, up 3 cents apiece compared with a week ago.

Meanwhile, the average self-serve price of diesel fuel fell 1 cent over the past week, to $4.399, in its first decline since April 7.
