BRISTOL – Mount Hope High School’s success at establishing a proficiency-based diploma system has earned the school an AARP Andrus Legacy Award for innovation in education.
The award, which was given to one high school in each state last month, includes a $10,000 prize. The AARP started the award this year – the 50th anniversary of the organization – in honor of Ethel Percy Andrus, a former high school principal and founder of the AARP.

AARP and the National Teachers Association said they selected Mount Hope, which serves Bristol and Warren, because the school’s new diploma system has vastly improved student performance. The state has overhauled its diploma program, mandating that students assemble a portfolio as part of their requirements for graduation. State education officials have acknowledged that Mount Hope has led the way in enacting those changes. •
