PROVIDENCE – St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island announced today that John M. Fogarty, who has served as acting CEO since last year, is the Catholic health system’s new president and CEO.

Fogarty took the helm at St. Joseph, which operates Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence and St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care in Providence, after longtime CEO John Keimig resigned to lead Quality Partners of Rhode Island.

Fogarty has been part of the management team at St. Joseph since 1988, and has served as its executive vice president since 2003. During his tenure, he has played a key role in the system’s evolution, including leading the development of specialty rehabilitation and psychiatric services at the St. Joseph Hospital campus, outpatient satellite services at Our Lady of Fatima and, later, serving as chief operating officer for the entire organization, focusing on operational and quality improvement.

“John Fogarty is the strong consensus choice to lead our organization during what will most assuredly be a pivotal time in our corporate history,” said Bishop Thomas Tobin, chairman of the St. Joseph board of trustees, in a news release. “Upon assuming duties as interim CEO, he quickly demonstrated a capacity for executive leadership and strategic thinking that balances his strong operational talents.”

Fogarty received both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in health care administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves on the board of the Urban League of Rhode Island and the VNS of Greater Rhode Island. He lives in Barrington with his wife, Janet, and two sons.

St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island is a Providence-based health care system that includes the St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care, Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, the St. Joseph Living Center, the St. Joseph School of Nursing and the Southern New England Rehabilitation Center. Associated with but not financed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, the health system and its divisions are JCAHO-accredited. Additional information is available at www.SaintJosephRI.com.
