R.I. no longer in Top 10 for taxes, study finds

MADISON, Wis. – State and local taxes consumed 12.19 percent of Rhode Islanders’ personal income in fiscal 2006, the 12th highest share nationwide, based on a recent analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau. That was down from 12.3 percent of personal income in 2005, when the Ocean State was No. 7 in tax burden. (READ MORE)

Wisconsin also fell out of the Top 10, dropping to No. 11 in 2006 from No. 8 in 2005, Todd Berry, president of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, told the Associated Press.

Louisiana rose nine spots to No. 5 and New Jersey rose six to No. 9, increases he attributed to ailing economies. “They had been lower in rankings and they just moved above us,” Berry said.

Wyoming had the highest 2006 tax burden as a percentage of personal income. Filling out the Top 10 were New York, Alaska, Maine, Louisiana, Hawaii, Vermont, New Mexico, New Jersey and West Virginia.
