Crunching numbers for a living might not be for everyone, but those who choose to work in the accounting field would find it difficult to find a better place to work than Tofias PC.
Marc Busny, director and chief marketing officer, said the group truly enjoys working together. “No matter what it is you do, it comes down to what kind of people you work with.”
Busny said he likes to think of the Tofias staff – which handles financial-statement preparation, tax services, audits and business consulting – as a group that “works hard and plays hard.”
In fact, each member of the staff from all four locations – Providence, Newport, New Bedford and Cambridge – has met at a training or social situation on more than one occasion, making it easier for them to work together.
The company has a large client base and continues to grow, something that Busny believes helps it retain staff. “Steady growth creates more opportunities, which makes people want to stay and grow with the company.”
Busny said Tofias has traditionally grown the firm organically – which is to say, via word-of-mouth and referrals – and the company’s reputation is widely known in the industry.
The firm is known for hiring employees right out of college. “Sometimes interns will end up being hired, and we’ve also hired accountants right out of school with no experience,” Busny said.
Rich Botham has worked at Tofias for six years. He became an employee when the company he worked for, Roony, Plotkin & Willey, merged with Tofias. Botham said he started out doing entry-level work and today he’s an audit manager at the Providence office.
“My work is never boring,” said Botham. “I do have a staff that I manage, but I also have a lot of client contact. … Every day is different for me and I really enjoy it,” he said.
He works in a building that was originally part of the Providence train station. It is located in a desirable section of the city, where upscale restaurants are plentiful. Yet he said he prefers to eat with his colleagues in the common room at the office because “I think we just really enjoy each other’s company.”
The benefit package for employees includes the standards, along with a 100-percent tuition reimbursement. In addition, the company subsidizes fitness programs for employees, provides regular training programs, and hosts a summer outing as well as an annual holiday party.
Tofias is also a community-oriented company that has formed a charitable foundation. Beneficiaries include The Salvation Army Christmas Castle, The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House Food Drive and the CVS Caremark Downtown 5k.
This year, Tofias PC was named by Accounting Today as one of the top 100 firms.
“I can’t imagine working at anyplace better than this,” Botham said. “I can continue to move up here – and it’s true, the people you work with makes all the difference.” •
