R.I. gas prices fall 3¢ in second straight decline

PROVIDENCE – “Lower crude oil prices have had some impact at the gas pumps locally, as gasoline prices in Rhode Island are down an average of 3 cents [in] the second straight week of decreases,” according to AAA Southern New England.

AAA’s July 28 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $4.069 per gallon, a decline of 3 cents from last week and 4 cents from the July 14 survey. Today’s price was 93 cents above the local average at the beginning of the year and $1.09 above the year-ago price of $2.959 per gallon.

Nationwide, the average price of self-serve regular fell 2 cents to $4.06 per gallon from the July 21 survey’s $4.08, matching last week’s decline. (READ MORE)

The range in prices for unleaded regular in the Ocean State this week widened to 35 cents, from a low of $3.949 to a high of $4.299, AAA said.

Average self-serve prices for other grades of fuel this week in Rhode Island were $4.209 for midgrade unleaded gasoline (down 2 cents from a week ago); $4.319 for premium unleaded (down 1 cent); and $4.919 for diesel (down 1 cent). The nonprofit auto club continued to urge motorists to shop around for the best gas prices.
