Cox to raise DVR, basic cable rates Friday

WARWICK – Cox Communications will raise the cost of digital video recording and some cable packages on Friday.

The standard cable service rate – which includes Cox’s basic and expanded cable packages – will rise 7 percent, from $45.95 to $48.99 per month.

The cost of basic cable service will increase to $12.99 in every Rhode Island community except East Providence, where it will rise to $9.90.

Basic cable customers will take the biggest hit in Burrillville, Cranston, Foster, Gloucester, Johnston and Scituate, where the cost per month will rise by 26 percent. The increase is lower in other communities which already had higher prices than those six municipalities.

The cost of DVR service will also rise, from $9.99 per month to $11.99 per month. No prices will go down.

The new rates, which the company attributed to rising energy costs, take effect on Friday.

Cox Communications – a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortune 500 company Cox Enterprises – is a broadband communications and entertainment company with more than 6 million business and residential customers nationwide including about 450,000 basic cable subscribers in New England.
