Where does Dr. Sumita Gokhale find the time? Gokhale is a pathologist with University Pathology LLC, a fast-growing group practice out of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence. She also holds a faculty position at Boston University and has co-authored 17 papers in peer-reviewed journals. And, oh yeah, she is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and also in cytopathology.
Gokhale arrived in Rhode Island a year ago, following a path that took her from medical school in India to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston to Harvard Medical School.
While interviewing for residency programs, Gokhale volunteered at the Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, for a year.
When she joined the pathology residency program at the UTMB, she also was involved in clinical research that received funding from the UTMB M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Southern Medical Association.
Gokhale’s interest in genetics brought her to a fellowship in molecular general pathology at Harvard Medical School. She also completed rotations at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital and at Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
Gokhale hasn’t slowed since coming to Rhode Island.
“Since we are growing faster than we can hire, I along with other pathologists in the group are going the extra mile – and hours – to help support the growth,” she said. •
