Daniel W. Majcher may have more influence on state government than people who have been around Rhode Island politics for longer than his 35 years.
Recently moved from being assistant director of special projects for the R.I. Department of Administration, Majcher provides legal advice to Gov. Donald L. Carcieri in areas including statutory interpretation, legislative and budgetary analysis and questions of constitutional authority.
“My work has a direct and significant impact on our state, at present as well as in the future,” he wrote in his 40 Under Forty application.
It’s a daunting task, particularly given the state’s fiscal issues. But for Majcher, whose diverse legal and fiscal background includes stints at Fidelity Investments and Charles Schwab & Co. Inc., it’s not out of his skill set.
While at the Department of Administration, he played a critical role in Carcieri’s fiscal fitness program dubbed “The Big Audit.” In his application, he wrote that his work was key to efforts that saved Rhode Island taxpayers $275 million.
As an attorney, he played a significant role in cases involving Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the state Personnel Appeal Board. At the time of publication, Majcher was spearheading the defense of a lawsuit against 13 state agency defendants brought by a state employee union.
As for his motivation, one need not look further than his family photo album.
“I have chosen to be a public servant in order to make a difference in Rhode Island, where my wife and I are raising our two children,” he wrote. •
