PROVIDENCE -- The Slater Technology Fund, a state-backed venture capital fund, announced today it has provided the first round of seed money for MoFuse, a Providence company that adapts Web sites for mobile phone browsers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
MoFuse - short for Mobile Fusion - was founded in August 2007. Its platform allows any online publisher to create a mobile version of its Web site in just a few minutes.
“We’re thrilled at this validating investment by the Slater Technology Fund, and we look forward to utilizing it toward continuing our growth,” Annette Tonti, MoFuse’s CEO, said in a statement. “The wide adoption of our platform has necessitated more hires and of course, more investment. So we’re especially gratified that it’s from such an important, local partner.”
MoFuse says it is one of the fastest-growing mobile publishers in the world. The company’s network of sites has more than quadrupled since the start of this year, growing from 2,200 at the end of last year to nearly 12,000 today. MoFuse’s clients include Mashable, ReadWriteWeb, PoliticalWire, HarvardBusiness and Doc Searls.
The company recently presented at the final Providence Geeks dinner of the summer.
“The more we consume the Web through our mobile devices, the more impetus there will be toward MoFuse’s growth,” said Thorne Sparkman, managing director of the Slater Technology Fund. “And while it assembles a burgeoning network of sites, MoFuse is building a talent and experience base that will be tough to overtake.”
Sparkman added: “We see this as a tremendous opportunity to enable a large, global publishing population to integrate with the mobile channel.”
MoFuse, a Providence-based startup, focuses on helping adapt Web sites for mobile-phone use. For more information or to try the company’s platform, visit MoFuse.com.
