PROVIDENCE – John Maeda will be inaugurated as Rhode Island School of Design’s 16th president on Sept. 12 at the First Baptist Church, 75 North Main St.

Maeda, 41, has been on the job since June, when the previous president, Roger Mandle, stepped down.

Friday’s ceremony will be followed at 7 p.m. by what has been billed as a campus-wide celebration and block party along the canal walk at Market Square. Music acts will include Triangle Forest and the Awesome Brothers.

Speakers at Maeda’s inauguration include: Merrill Sherman, Bank Rhode Island CEO and RISD Board of Trustees Chairwoman, Hope Alswang, RISD Museum of Art, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, Providence Mayor David Cicilline, Brown University President Ruth Simmons, Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab and Jessie Sherfin, RISD provost, and Maeda. •
