In a down economy, flexibility spurs growth

Flexibility is crucial for sustained business growth, especially in a down economy. Lincoln-based Lighthouse Computer Services Inc. certainly understands that, as evidenced by a new high-tech criminal tracking system with the potential for a host of applications.

The company specializes in resolving computer problems for businesses but jumped at the challenge of developing the new tracking system with partner OmniLink Systems Inc., based outside Atlanta.

The system uses a small ankle bracelet to quickly track wearers with the help of a Web application that stores information on offsite servers.

OmniLink provided the device and software. Lighthouse conducted research on what law-enforcement workers needed most. The result is a system that offers continuous monitoring, immediate responses and alerts when offenders trespass in or out of restricted areas.

The unified R.I. Criminal Offender Tracking System has been tested across the state but is not yet in use. Its potential goes beyond tracking parolees and those convicted of minor offenses who might otherwise be taking up space in the crowded state prison. Proponents say it could also be used to track Alzheimer’s patients and monitor restraining orders.

The American Civil Liberties Union has some understandable concerns about those wider applications. But from a business standpoint the product offers significant growth potential and serves as an example for other companies who want to grow but are wary of branching out beyond their core product or service. •
