Verizon adds new cell tower in Tiverton

TIVERTON — Verizon Wireless subscribers in northeast Newport County should see an improvement in their cell phone service with the addition of a new cell phone tower.

The company said the new tower was installed to increase high-speed wireless data coverage and capacity along Route 138 and Fish Road in the northern part of Tiverton and the surrounding area.

The new structure is not actually a traditional cell tower but instead a monopole, “which looks like a large flagpole with the antennas near the top,” said David Thomson, a spokesman for Verizon.

The company says it has invested more than $2.2 billion in its New England wireless network since 2000, and more than $100 million during the first half of this year.

“We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers,” said Richard Enright, director of Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, in a news release.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), a Dow 30 company, delivers broadband and other communications services through its Verizon Wireless and Verizon Wireline divisions. For more information about Verizon and its Rhode Island operations, visit www.verizon.com/ri.
