Hospital association recognizes ‘hospital heroes’


WARWICK – The Hospital Association of Rhode Island recently honored several community officials as well as rank-and-file hospital employees as “hospital heroes,” recognizing their service and commitment to health care.

The Most Rev. Robert E. Mulvee, former Roman Catholic bishop of Providence and chairman of the St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island board of trustees from 1997 to 2005, was presented with the Benjamin R. Sturges Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to the health care community.

In addition, state Sen. Dennis L. Algiere, R-Westerly; state Rep. Peter L. Lewiss, D-Westerly, and state Higher Education Commissioner Jack Warner received the HARI Award for Public Service, which recognizes “extraordinary achievement in serving the people of Rhode Island.”

At the same ceremony, a “Celebration of Excellence in Hospital Care,” the association recognized employees of the year from each of its member hospitals with an award for excellence in hospital care:

  • Linda Rowey, an educator at Landmark Medical Center;
  • Sarah Cook, a linen coordinator at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island;
  • Barbara Bowers, a staff registered nurse in the Cardiac Cath Lab at The Miriam Hospital;
  • Dorothy Berube, a unit secretary at Newport Hospital;
  • Dr. Thomas O’Toole, chief of primary care at the Providence VA Medical Center;
  • Jason Baker, a unit assistant at Rhode Island Hospital;
  • Maria Tavares, a senior medical technologist and education coordinator at Roger Williams Medical Center;
  • Shannon Booth, a pharmacist at South County Hospital;
  • Linda Greaves, a registered nurse at St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island; and
  • Jodi Lamport, a nursing assistant at The Westerly Hospital.
