Van Beuren Foundation awards $4.7M in grants

NEWPORT – The van Beuren Charitable Foundation has awarded 80 grants, totaling $4.7 million, to Newport and Rhode Island organizations that improve the quality of life in Newport County.

The family-run van Beuren Charitable Foundation primarily supports organizations active in Newport County. More than than $50 million has been granted since its founding in 1986.

“The investments in our grants portfolio reflect community aspirations: being an economically vibrant, historic city in the 21st century; excellence in education; access to quality healthcare; open space that adds to community vitality. We are pleased to partner with the community to build upon Newport County’s existing assets and continue to improve the quality of life and quality of place for Newport residents,” Archbold D. van Beuren, president, said in a statement.

Here is a sample of the grants:

Education:

  • $97,500 to support the Rhode Island Composites Alliance workforce development efforts (International Yacht Restoration School, fiscal sponsor)
  • $250,000 for the Center for Cyber Conflict Studies (Naval War College Foundation)
  • $114,885 to support the Newport Partnership for Families’ Chronic Early Absenteeism/Truancy Reduction Initiative (Newport County Community Mental Health Center, fiscal sponsor)

Health:

  • $82,000 to support outpatient psychiatric services at the Newport Hospital Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Clinic (Emma Pendelton Bradley Hospital)
  • $87,184 for dental clinic equipment (East Bay Community Action Program)
  • $95,000 to support food acquisition for Newport County programs (Rhode Island Community Food Bank)

Landscapes and building:

  • $575,000 for renovations to the Resource Center (Newport Historical Society)
  • $85,878 for Campus Master Plan (Newport Art Museum)
  • $50,000 to support collaborative planning to initiate a Newport Parks and Open Space Master Plan (Newport Tree Society, fiscal sponsor)
