Van Beuren Foundation to observe NUWC interns

NEWPORT – Members and staff from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation will visit the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport on Aug. 20 to observe the Newport County high school students at work in the Undersea Technology Apprentice Program, a paid internship that allows high school students to focus their studies on electrical engineering and physics.
The van Beuren Charitable Foundation, focused on “protecting and preserving the unique characteristics of Newport County,” provided a grant to help make the program possible.
The program provides engineering design lab experience by having students build and re-engineer an underwater vehicle and test it against each other’s designs.
Representatives from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation will view the vehicles and talk to program participants. NUWC Newport offered two program sessions this summer to 44 high school students from partner schools in Newport County.
