ACEEE honors National Grid efficiency programs

WASHINGTON – The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has named 10 National Grid programs to its annual list of the nation’s most effective and innovative energy efficiency efforts. The number of awards is the highest for any company in the Northeast, the utility noted.
“ACEEE conducted this national review to recognize outstanding energy efficiency programs and honor the people and organizations responsible for their success,” Dan York, the nonprofit’s project director for the annual awards, said in a statement today. “Programs such as National Grid’s demonstrate the very real value of energy efficiency to the customers it serves.”
The group recognized National Grid for the following programs, all offered in New England: its appliance management program; energy initiative; EnergyWise; Design 2000Plus; home performance with Energy Star and MassSave; the Northeast Energy Star lighting and appliance initiative; small business services; advanced buildings; whole-building assessment and benchmarking; and GasNetworks.
“This year marks National Grid’s 20th anniversary of offering innovative, effective energy efficiency solutions, making this national recognition especially meaningful,” Tom King, president of National Grid USA, said in a statement today. “Through our programs, we can help every customer – from the homeowner to the industrial plant manager – lower their electric bills, save energy and mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing energy consumption. We urge every customer to make energy efficiency a priority.”
Since the company began offering efficiency programs in 1987, King said, participating customers have saved more than 26 billion kilowatt hours of energy – enough to power 4.3 million homes for a year – and more than $2.5 billion.
“These programs are delivering energy savings that are critical in helping customers cope with today’s high energy costs, plus they make an important environmental contribution because they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Martin Kusler, director of ACEEE’s utilities program, said in a statement. “This is truly a ‘win-win’ situation.”
National Grid, a division of the U.K.-based National Grid plc, distributes electricity and natural gas to nearly 4 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island.
