PROVIDENCE – A $163.7 million state construction contract for a new Sakonnet River Bridge has been awarded to Cardi Corporation, the R.I. Department of Transportation announced on April 17.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for today at 3 p.m. on Riverside Avenue, on the Portsmouth side of the bridge.
Construction is set to begin soon and the new bridge will be just south of the existing 53-year-old bridge. The current bridge, which has been restricted to vehicles lighter than 22 tons, will be demolished following the expected opening, in 2012, of the new bridge, DOT said.
The contract with Cardi has an “early incentive clause” that could push the project’s completion up to a year earlier, according to DOT.
